Ride safe โ€” a few local tips

Koh Phangan is beautiful to explore by scooter, but the roads demand respect โ€” some hills (especially towards Haad Rin and the northern beaches) are very steep. A little care goes a long way:

  • Carry the right licence: you need a motorcycle licence or an International Driving Permit with the motorbike category โ€” it also matters for insurance and police checks.
  • Always wear your helmet โ€” it's the law, and it's checked.
  • Check the bike before you ride: brakes, tyres and lights. Photograph any existing scratches.
  • Take the hills slowly and avoid riding in heavy rain if you're not confident.
  • Never drink and ride. On party nights, book a transfer instead.
Not a confident rider? There's no pressure to ride. A private minivan or a personal chauffeur lets you see the island with none of the risk.
