Surat Thani Airport
to Koh Phangan.

Surat Thani (URT) on the mainland often has the cheapest flights to the region. It's a longer journey than Samui, but simple when you know the steps โ€” and we'll be waiting when you land on the island.

The journey

The mainland route, step by step

Plan for roughly 4 to 6 hours in total, depending on connections. Combined bus-and-ferry tickets make it painless.

    Land at Surat Thani

Fly into Surat Thani Airport (URT). It's on the mainland, about 1.5โ€“2 hours from the ferry piers on the coast at Donsak.

  2. 2
    ๐ŸšŒ

Bus / van to the pier

A connecting coach or minivan takes you from the airport to the Donsak ferry piers. Most travellers buy a combined ticket that covers this leg and the boat.

    Ferry to Thong Sala

Ferries (such as Raja, Seatran and Lomprayah) cross to Koh Phangan's Thong Sala pier. The crossing takes roughly 2 to 3 hours depending on the service.

  4. 4
    ๐Ÿš

    Minivan to your hotel

Mr M meets you at Thong Sala pier and drives you straight to your accommodation โ€” a welcome comfort after a long travel day.

Is Surat Thani worth it?

If you're on a budget, yes โ€” flights into Surat Thani are frequently much cheaper than into Koh Samui, and combined bus-and-ferry tickets are inexpensive and well organised. The trade-off is time: it's a half-day journey rather than a quick hop.

  • Buy a through-ticket that bundles the transfer bus and the ferry โ€” it's the smoothest and best-value way.
  • Aim for a daytime arrival so you comfortably make the ferry connections; the last boats leave in the afternoon/early evening.
  • Arrange your island pickup ahead. After a long trip, having Mr M waiting at Thong Sala with a cold, air-conditioned van is the best possible welcome.
Prefer speed? Flying into Koh Samui instead cuts the journey to a couple of hours โ€” compare both in our guides.
